This research covers the theme of the elderly and the Open University for the Third Age (UNATI). Therefore, it aims to understand the role of UNATI as a policy capable of promoting spaces with a view to valuing the elderly as a social and individual human being with full conditions for participation, interaction, socialization and learning. It was outlined by the problem in order to discuss the perceptions about old age, about learning and about the Open University for the Third Age of the State University of Paraná (Unespar) - Paranaguá campus. The theoretical foundations sought to reflect on aging and old age articulating the assumptions of the theory of social representations, directed the theoretical dialogue with Simone Beauvoir among others who proposes an approach to the elderly as human, historical, social beings who permanently learn, contribute to the society and are in the process of learning and living old age in an active and participatory way. We sought to reflect on aging and old age, seeking to identify the concepts and meanings, outlined by learning in the third age, policies aimed at the population of this age and, finally, the contextualization of Open Universities for the Third Age. The methodology expresses a research organized in the bibliographic stage and in the field stage. It is an exploratory study seeking, with the elderly, their perception about the theme that, in turn, expresses the social representations that imply common knowledge in a given historical space-time, therefore, it was also configured in a study descriptive. Its field of research was the UNATI of the State University of Paraná - campus of Paranaguá and had the contribution of a total of ten elderly women, participants in this program. Data collection was carried out through conversation circles with the help of a semi-structured script, whose purpose was to allow the researcher to mediate the lines along the conversation circle. The instrument (semi-structured script) was organized into five blocks covering the investigative fields: aging in the subject's perception; learning: feeling active and belonging; "UNATI: space for interaction, coexistence and transformation". Data analysis took place in a qualitative approach and was organized based on the Collective Subject Discourse (CSD) technique. This technique is also based on the Theory of Social Representations and enabled the researcher to organize the subjects' speeches into key expressions, central ideas and anchors. From this organization it was possible to configure the themes that configured the data analysis. The results indicate that the elderly perceive UNATI as an important space, a policy that allows them to participate, interact, learn, experience, share, live together and understand the demands that are presented to old age itself. They yearn for the guarantee of more social rights and confirm that being at UNATI is also the possibility of disseminating new knowledge about old age.eng
