Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to compare the well-being of children and adolescents in two types of shared custody arrangements: shared custody with alternating residence (SCAR) and shared custody without alternation of residence. The specific objectives were to analyze the well-being of children via Kidscreen-52 and SDQ questionnaires and to compare the results of the children in the two groups of arrangements, additionally correlate the results with the variables informed by the parents of the interviewed children both in the sociodemographic questionnaire (such as time in the arrangement, time since the separation, frequency of alternation or contact with the non-resident parent, age, income, among others) and in the interview (absence of conflict between the parents, communication between them, how the parent evaluates the parenting of the other parent, satisfaction of the parent with the arrangement, how much he or she considers to be the well-being of the child in the arrangement. The sample comprised a total of 16 families (20 parents and 20 children). From the group of the children, 10 were living in SCAR, and 10 were living in the Other arrangement modality (shared custody without alternation of residence). Statistical analyses of comparison were performed between both groups of children, correlation analysis (of the results of the research instruments with other variables), and qualitative analysis of content brought by the parents about their perception regarding the arrangement. When statistically analyzing the overall results of the research instruments applied to the children, no significant difference was found between the results of the children who were living in SCAR and those without SCAR, there was only a difference of moderate magnitude on the Kidscreen health and physical activity subscale, with better results for the children without SCAR. There were also no differences found between groups in the answers to questions related to the co-parenting of the parents. In the correlation of different variables, it was discovered that in families where the parents had fewer conflicts, the children presented better Kidscreen results, regardless of the arrangement to which they belonged. This correlation was of moderate magnitude (rho = 0.53; p = 0.016). The qualitative analysis results were consistent with this correlation because the main class found, When considering the discourses of all the parents as well as when considering the discourses of the parents without SCAR was “Parental couple’s relationship” (21% of the text segments of the parents in general and 30.2% of the text segments of the parentes without SCAR) in what the interviewees reported how the aspects involving the relationship between the parents interfered with the well-being of the children and the parents in a positive or negative manner. For the group of parents with SCAR, the main class found in the qualitative analysis “The child chooses” (30.2% of the text segments) wherein flexibility is mentioned so the child feels free to choose when and where he or she wants to be. The main limitations of the research were the small sample size (20 children), and the significant majority of families appertain to a high economic/cultural level, thus having this sample bias. The strengths are that the study combined information from the children themselves with information from the parents and quantitative and qualitative analyses. Moreover, the answers to the research instruments were provided directly by the child in a self-report format. As a suggestion for future studies, it may be recommended to expand the sample and include other comparison groups, such as children in intact families (without separated parents) and children in unilateral custody. Furthermore, in purpose to generalize the results, the inclusion of families from different social classes seems relevant.
