Abstract

The thesis, entitled "Getúlio Vargas State Centre for Professional Agricultural Education/PR (1941-1956): Memory, Politics and Educational Action," addresses the relevance of the Getúlio Vargas Agricultural School to Paraná's educational system. The school, strategically located in the Campos Gerais, offered primary education, prepared farmers' children and took in orphans, in the national-developmentalist political context of the Vargas era. The research questions the importance of knowing and recognising this history for education in Paraná. The particularity of the study lies in its emphasis on the historicity of agricultural institutions, especially the Palmeira Agricultural School. Recognising the territorial implantation and constitution of this agricultural school is fundamental to understanding it central role in training rural workers. The research explores cultural representations, contributing to knowledge of the educational legacy and mission of the schools, which were shaped by class struggles and intervention practices. The objectives of the research include investigating the trajectory of agricultural schools in Paraná, identifying the influence of legislation and public policies on these institutions, and debating the social role of the Palmeira Agricultural School. The methodology, based on historical-dialectical materialism, involves an extensive literature review, analysing historical documents, documentary collections and theoretical texts. Authors such as Karl Marx, Dermeval Saviani, Caio Prado Júnior, and others are incorporated to enrich the understanding of the relationship between agriculture, history and education, as well as to provide critical input on educational policies over time. The results indicate an interconnection between memory, history and transformation in Brazilian agricultural education, providing an in-depth understanding of the origins, development and impact of agricultural schools in Paraná. The conclusion emphasises the importance of valuing and recovering knowledge of the cultural heritage of agricultural schools as a contribution to public policy in Paraná. It proposes the creation of a virtual museum that acts as a library for accessing the collection of school institutions. This tool, which can be replicated for new projects, will form a network of knowledge and preservation of the historical heritage of agricultural schools. The museum will not only give visibility to the heritage assets, but will also promote their repercussion in academic circles, allowing global access to the collections. The research contributes to the Memory of the World programme and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially with regard to access to information, as advocated by UNESCO in 2022, as well as to achieving the 2030 agenda to combat poverty, protect the environment and the climate and ensure peace and prosperity. Substantial investments are suggested to ensure the continuity of research and promote a sustainable and equal future. In short, the research not only documents the past, but highlights the continued relevance of agricultural institutions in educational training and regional development, offering an in-depth understanding of Paraná's educational legacy.
