Could a film be efficiently defined by its duration? Would duration be capable of registering a supposed reality by letting it flow without interferences? Should a long length movie be necessarily tied to a thinking image and, thus, the disclosure of some sort of truth of the world? Stemming from these questions and the denial of their assumptions, the research proposes a new comprehension of a group of transnational movies produced in the last four decades that, up to now, have been thought as part of a durational cinema directly related to different branches of so-called realism. The purpose of the study is, therefore, to replace the primacy of time for the perspective of a materialistic everydayness – which is frequently referred to, in these durational studies, as just one of the many elements that define the canon of realist and slow cinemas. The hypothesis is that everydayness crosses these productions in the form of suspended narratives, which are characterized by dedramatized, thin, open plots in conjunction with certain plasticity whose emphasis is in the thingness of the world. In that sense, meaning to investigate the different modes of aesthetic experiences that this set of films offer, the study uses the concept of production of presence as a reference for the film analysis of the defined corpus, comprised by Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975), usually thought as a hyperrealist movie, and La mujer sin cabeza (2008), considered part of a sensory realism. Through the visual description of both, underpinned by a phenomenological bias, this analytical gaze seeks to identify elements that indicate an oscillation between effects of meaning and presence, which gives place to moments in which the concreteness of the little things in the world stages the foreground. Through the results obtained in this trajectory, the research tentatively tries to tackle the impossibility of a neutral register of the real world in cinema by assuming the simulacrum of the everyday life instead of an arguable representation of it, which allows to elaborate the still initial notion of movies about the everyday life that are not compromised with the unveiling of “transcendental truth,” but instead with what they make visible.eng
