Abstract

This research aims to understand how communications about domestic violence are made by women on the social media platform Instagram (D'Andréa, 2018, 2020; Gillespie, 2010). It is important to consider the structure of these discourses while considering the role of the feminist movement as a catalyst for these discussions. For this, we compare the work of Filomena Gregori, Cenas e Queixas: um estudo sobre mulheres, relações violentas e a prática feminista (1993), where she She analyzes the SOS MULHER moviment, with the hashtag and profile Mas ele Nunca me Bateu. Violence against women is a frequent and cruel reality, and, when intertwined with algorithms that influence online content, it unfolds into issues that are explored in this text. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to comprehend how the fourth wave of feminism (hooks, 2019; Matos, 2020; Sarmento, 2017; Rago; Pinto, 2003) is presented by digital social media, and how reports of domestic violence are presented and structured on Instagram, considering changes over time in the way victims talk about violence. The methodology includes a historical and conceptual survey of feminism, a description of profiles that fight domestic violence, and an empirical analysis of the complaints of women who were victims of this kind of violence. The study is divided into chapters, starting with a history of feminism and the evolution of its waves, followed by an exploration of the forms of feminist enunciation in Latin America and the relationship between the concepts of the Instagram platform and female communication and expression, culminating in the analysis of how digital infrastructures shape and influence these interactions. The investigation culminates in the application of Grounded Theory (Glaser; Strauss, 1967; Chamaz, 2009; Fragoso; Recuero; Amaral, 2016). In order to better understand the phenomenon, we propose an investigative delimitation through a profile filter, and debate the findings of the methodological chapters. The analyses demonstrated that, although there is a valuable transmission of experiences and support through Instagram, the corporate and algorithmic logics that govern the platform in the formats of the attention economy can paradoxically undermine the authenticity and urgency of violence reports.
